In early 1980s, Singapore formulated its first National Computerization Plan. In the next 30 years, a few national info-comm plans were formulated. Building up a solid foundation for Singapore's smart city development.

In Nov 2014, Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of Singapore, officially announced the "Smart Nation" program, which marked the start of its smart city development.
